Zakat Sense — Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 2026
Zakat Sense is developed and maintained by Al-Maqdisi Productions LLC. We built it so that Muslims can calculate and track their Zakat with confidence — and with their financial information kept entirely on their own device. Privacy isn't a setting here; it's the architecture.
In short:
- Your financial data never leaves your device. Amounts, assets, Zakat figures, and history are stored locally and are never transmitted to us or anyone else.
- No account. No sign-up. We never ask for your name, email, phone number, or address.
- No ads. No cross-app tracking. No selling of data. Ever.
- Anonymous analytics only — coarse, aggregate usage; never your actual financial values and never anything that identifies you.
Information We Collect
Financial & Progress Data (stored only on your device)
Everything you enter to calculate Zakat — asset and liability amounts, currencies, your calculated Zakat figures, your yearly history, and your personal Hawl (Zakat anniversary) date — is stored locally in your device's secure app storage. We have no server that receives or stores this information. Deleting the app removes this data from your device.
App Preferences
Your chosen language, madhab, and theme are stored on your device and included, anonymously, in usage analytics so we can understand which options people use.
Location Data (Optional)
Zakat Sense never collects or stores your precise (GPS) location. The optional "find Zakat organizations near me" feature works only when you tap it and grant permission: your device's approximate coordinates — truncated on your device to roughly 1 km precision before anything is sent — go once to a reverse-geocoding service to resolve your city or region, and are then discarded. Full-precision location never leaves your device, and the feature is entirely opt-in.
Anonymous Analytics
To understand how the app is used and to improve it, we collect anonymous, aggregate usage analytics through PostHog. This is engineered to contain no personally identifying information by design:
- A random, non-identifying identifier generated on your device. It is not your name or email and cannot be linked to your identity; it resets if you reinstall the app.
- App version, platform (iOS/Android), and your selected language and madhab.
- Which screens and features are used, and anonymous interaction events.
- Coarse ranges only — for example a Zakat-due band or a portfolio size such as "three to five assets," and which asset types you use (cash, gold, stocks, and so on). We never record your actual amounts, balances, or Zakat figures.
- A coarse, country- or city-level location inferred from your network connection so we know roughly where the app is used. We do not store your IP address, and we never derive a precise location from it.
A safeguard built into the app rejects any analytics event that would contain a number, a currency value, or other identifying data before it is ever sent. To stop all future collection, simply uninstall the app.
In-App Purchases (Optional)
All features are free. You may optionally leave a tip to support development ("Support Development"). Payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google — we never see or store your card or payment details, only that a tip was completed. A tip is a gift to the developer; it is never your Zakat or Sadaqah, and no feature is ever locked behind payment.
Third-Party Services
Zakat Sense uses a small number of third-party services. None of them ever receive your financial values or anything that identifies you:
- PostHog — anonymous product analytics, as described above.
- Apple App Store / Google Play / RevenueCat — only if you choose to leave an optional tip. Payment is handled by the app store; we receive no payment information.
- Precious-metal & currency rate provider — to show current gold, silver, and exchange rates. These requests send only a request for public market rates — no personal or financial information.
- Finnhub — only if you use live stock-quote lookup, the ticker symbol you search (e.g. "AAPL") is sent to fetch a public price. The request never includes how many shares you hold or any value. Enter values manually and nothing is sent.
- CoinGecko — only if you use live crypto-price lookup, the coin you select (e.g. "bitcoin") and your display currency are sent to fetch a public price — never your holdings. Manual entry sends nothing.
- Google Sheets — the app refreshes its public directory of Zakat organizations from a read-only published spreadsheet. This is a plain download of a public list and carries no data about you.
- BigDataCloud — only if you use "find organizations near me," your on-device-truncated approximate coordinates go once to this reverse-geocoding service to resolve your city or region, then are discarded.
Data Security
Your sensitive financial inputs stay on your device under the operating system's app-sandbox protections. Zakat Sense offers an optional biometric app lock (Face ID / fingerprint) for added protection. Because your financial data never reaches a server of ours, there is no central database of user finances to breach.
Children's Privacy
Zakat Sense is intended for a general audience and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because we collect no personal information from anyone, this risk is minimal.
Device Backups
Your device's own backup system (Android Auto Backup, or your iPhone's iCloud / encrypted local backup) may include the app's on-device data, so your Zakat records can survive a phone upgrade. That backup is controlled by you and encrypted by your device — it is never readable by us. You can exclude the app from your device's backup in your OS settings, or use the app's own export for a copy you control.
Your Rights
- No account, no login — there is nothing to sign in to, and no profile of you to request or delete.
- Your on-device data persists until you delete it in the app or uninstall the app.
- Anonymous analytics are retained in aggregate; because they contain no identifier tied to you, individual deletion isn't applicable. Uninstalling the app stops all future collection.
- Because we do not track you across apps, the app does not show Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) prompt.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new "Last updated" date.
